Papers of Francis James Child [manuscript], 1871-1893.

Child writes to friends and fellow scholars with personal and professional news. He discusses the language of the Shetland Islands and Peter A. Munch's work there; the Chaucer Society and its publications; folk remedies in Chaucer; Beowulf scholarship and his preference for the work of Moriz Heyne over Benjamin Thorpe; and A.J. Ellis's book "On early English pronunciation." There are also postcards to H.O. Houghton and Company regarding revisions of proof for "English and Scottish popular ballads" and one engraving of Child.
